A little rick-rack with my Lady Grey.

I managed to get my lining assembled today and I’m tickled pink! Most exciting is the mint green rick-rack. Followed by my nice new labels and some crazytown zig-zag stitches. And of course, brown and white polka dots. Here I am modeling my hastily pinned-together coat. RickRack5
[“Hey lady, I got a watch to sell you…]

My favorite part is the facing on the back neckline. I sewed a Lucy-label on with some messy zig-zags in neon green. At some point, I’ll raid my small stash of jewelry making supplies to add a little chain hanging loop. Don’t want to be too hasty with the adding of hardware. I prefer my machine’s timing just the way it is…

[Hello bear!]

Here’s a somewhat painful to look at detail shot of the front facing. Oh, the shapelessness…

I added the rick rack using the piping instructions in the lining section of the tailoring book suggested for the Lady Grey sewalong. The rick rack I’m using is GIANT! Nearly an inch and a half total width. I took the photo below to show how I sewed it on – just a little over half the total width placed over the facing’s right side, with the ‘bumps’ sticking out over the edge. I sewed close to the edge of the facing then trimmed the bumps off. I then sewed the polka dot material to the facing as usual. I ended up having to sew with a 3/8” seam rather than a 5/8” seam to get enough of the rick rack to show – just the ‘bumps’ of the rick rack showed when I used the 5/8” inch seam allowance.rickrack1
[Giant green rick rack makes me happy!]

As further proof of my ongoing impatience, here’s a badly lit photo of the coat pinned together and hanging on a hanger, pretending to be a real, live coat.

[hello, almost-coat!]

Tomorrow I will post my adventures in making a single-welt ipod pocket. With rick rack. Also, our next installment of dream jobs is right around the corner… ever dreamed of opening your very own fabric shop? Well Nikol did, and one year later that’s just what she’s got!

I know this is waaaay late in the game to comment, but I wonder what you decided about interlining? I am finally assembling my coat and thinking that it's awfully cold here in Vermont not to interline.

How fun – what a cool idea, adding the rick-rack inside! I totally pin my half-finished projects and pretend they're done too :) My dressform's always wearing some partly-finished item!

I love the look that giant rickrack gave your coat. I've been thinking a little about using piping on my coat, but the rickrack is a special touch.

    Thanks! Rickrack!

T-Isis – I really wasn't enthused about my lining but couldn't find anything better. I wanted something more contrasty. And green. I knew of the rick rack, because I'd been trying to come up with a reason to buy it from my local sewing shop (go sewtropolis!) and was considering ways to integrate in the coat without making it look like my mom snuck in with her glue gun and glitter fabric paint…. then I noticed the piping instructions in the tailoring book! Yay! Just wait 'till you see the single-welt-rick-rack ipod pocket….
